Description
Hoard. Yanggao County lies 60 km northeast of Datong City, its northern border adjoining Inner Mongolia. A fortification sits on a gentle slope halfway up Yunmen Mountain, 7.5 km north of the county seat. Below Yunmen Mountain lies Shoukoubao (Pass-Guarding Fort); the Shoukou River rises in Fengzhen County, Inner Mongolia, north of the mountains, and flows south into the pass. The Commentary on the Water Classic, Sanggan River section, states: 'The waters of Yanmen issue from Mount Yanmen.' The Qianlong-era Gazetteer of Datong Prefecture, in its section on mountains and rivers, states: 'The Yanmen River rises north of Yunmen Mountain in Yanggao, on the border with Fengzhen, and flows south into Shoukoubao; it is popularly called the Shoukou River.' From this it can be inferred that Yunmen Mountain is the ancient Mount Yanmen, and the Shoukou River is the ancient Yanmen River. Traveling from Yanggao toward the top of the Great Wall follows a river-valley passage leading to Inner Mongolia; about 15 km on, north of the mountains, is a village named 'Ershiliu' (Twenty-Six), through which the Great Wall passes. Tianqiao lies on the western slope of a valley 2.6 km due south of Ershiliu village. A small path through the valley bypasses the mountains to the south, reaching Wangguantun, and continues directly to Datong without passing through Yanggao county town. The coins were unearthed at Minghualiu Jiafenduo (the Liu family gravesite), on the west bank of a small stream northeast of Tianqiaocun. The terrain here is level; investigation showed the coins had been placed within a black-soil layer 1.7 m below the surface. According to the finder, the coins were stacked in neat order when unearthed, and cord-binding marks were still visible on the backs of the coins. The deposit measured roughly two-plus Chinese feet long, one-plus foot wide, and one-plus foot thick, with the great majority of coins intact. No ancient pottery sherds or other remains were found on the surface at the find spot. The coins themselves were fairly uniform and small in size, with no extraneous material mixed in, indicating this was indeed a hoard.
