Code: SX_0055_CTX003

State: 墓葬Tomb

Period: 战国Warring States

Discovery year: 2016. Tomb. A total of 17 vertical earthen-pit tombs were excavated, comprising M6, M7, M8, M9, M11, M12, M13, M16, M17, M18, M20, M21, M22, M23, M24, M25, and M26, dated to approximately the late Warring States through early Western Han period; plus one vertical-pit tomb with a side chamber, M14 alone, dated to the late Warring States period. These 18 tombs are arranged in an orderly fashion with no intercutting relationships; most form paired husband-and-wife tombs in separate but adjoining pits, with the male's tomb consistently to the right of the female's, likely constituting a lineage cemetery. Except for the M25-M26 pair, which face east, all others face north. Some tomb pits have a second-level ledge of undisturbed soil at the base; only 2 tombs have niches, and nearly all have foot-holds. Tool marks -- horizontal, vertical, and diagonal, in two widths -- survive on many pit walls. In many tombs the walls near the base bulge outward and are uneven, likely from soil packed between the outer coffin (guo) and the pit wall to reinforce the wooden chamber. Burial furniture is mostly one outer coffin (guo) with one inner coffin (guan), except for the side-chamber tomb M14, which has only an inner coffin; the outer coffins are generally wide, with some found resting on longitudinal support beams set into grooves beneath them, while the inner coffins are generally narrow; the guo cover and base boards run crosswise, while the guan base board runs lengthwise. All burials are supine with extended limbs: 8 male tombs, 7 female tombs, and 3 of undetermined sex. Among the 18 tombs, 11 contained pottery grave goods, 5 contained sacrificial animal bones, 4 yielded iron adzes in the fill, and 4 yielded mouth-jades (kouhan) -- of two types: fragments of agate rings and the hook-ends of bronze belt hooks. The excavated objects are predominantly pottery: M12 contained a lidded jar, M20 and M21 contained bowl-capped jars, and the remaining pottery-bearing tombs each contained small mingqi-type pottery vessels, in forms including ding tripods, dou stemmed dishes, hu vessels, yan steamers, yi vessels, pan basins, bo bowls, and guan jars. Other excavated items include small bronze, iron, jade/stone, and bone objects -- bronze belt hooks, bronze mirrors, bronze xiao knives, bronze seals, bronze spade coins, bronze knife coins, iron belt hooks, iron adzes, small iron knives, agate rings, jade rings, glass beads, bone tubes, and bone belt hooks -- totaling more than 160 pieces.
