Original table row No.: 98; Excavation year: 1996; Original total count: 173. Hoard, at the ancient city of Yunzhong. A Warring States hoard of knife and spade coins was discovered outside the west wall on 6 May 1996; Huang Xiquan reads the associated character as 目 (Mu). Hoard: the coins were found on the centerline of a north-south flood-diversion channel running parallel to the west city wall, about 50-60 m east of it. An earthen road crosses the ancient city east-west, exiting through the west gate. Because of silting from floodwaters over the years, the channel had filled in nearly level with the surrounding ground; it had been periodically dredged to keep it clear, but each time only down to its original bottom. This time it was deepened by another 30-40 cm, and as the bulldozer passed through, the ancient coins came to light, piled up in a heap that filled several basins and urns. It is said that when workers tied off one trouser leg to hold the coins, filling it to the knee, this gives some sense of the sheer quantity recovered.
