Description
Original table row No.: 254; Original total count: 731; Remark: Hoard. The great majority belong to the Left/Right system, with a small number of the "Zhong" (middle) type. The excavation report divides them into six types, with no illustration. It is said they resemble the Type A knife coins from Xiaojialou, though some show a near-qing-chime-shaped bend, so they are tentatively placed as Types 1-4. In his paper "Knife Coins Excavated in the Tianjin Region" (Proceedings of the Fifth Annual Conference, p. 178), Han Jiagu compared the Xiematai coins: Xiematai Types 1-2 correspond to Han's Type A-1 and A-2; Type 3 corresponds to Type 3B; Types 4-6 correspond to Type 3C, with matching counts. Han Jiagu's Types 3A-3C correspond to Shi Yongshi's Types 3-4, and Han's Types 1-2 correspond to Shi's Types 1-2. Recalculated, the totals should be 25 for Types 1-2 and 704 for Types 3-4. Han's so-called Type A-4, based on the available photograph, resembles Shi's Type 4, with the character "Ming" unbroken — yet Han also describes a qing-chime-shaped bend for it. Han Jiagu also led the excavation at Lancheng, Wuqing, so his classification criteria may be inconsistent; without photographs, however, this cannot be verified.
