Description

Context unknown. The seat of Changyang County under the Western Han. The city site backs onto Huilong Hill (anciently Mount Chang) to the north and faces the Changyang River (anciently the Chang River) to the south; about 500 m north-south and 350 m east-west, covering 175,000 sq m, in the area between Songcun, Chengdongcun, and Shiyang villages. No trace survives above ground today; only the rammed-earth foundations of the city wall survive underground. House foundations, kiln sites, and pottery wells have been found within and around the city site, along with Han-dynasty bricks and tiles, column-base stones, stone mortars, bronze chariot fittings, pottery jars, and Wuzhu coins. Around 1950 the tallest surviving remnants of the earthen city wall still stood 4-5 chi high, and knife coins and Wuzhu coins were commonly picked up during farming; Han-dynasty tomb clusters surround the site at Songcun, Shiyang, and Jiudingbu. Located south of the seat of Songcun Town government.
