Code: SD_0062_CTX001

State: 窖藏Hoard

Period: 战国Warring States

Hoard. Qi knife coins surfaced west of the Shandong Chemical Plant, Tianqiao District, Jinan, but this is not the primary findspot - the actual findspot was a construction site 1,500 m northwest of the plant, west of Zhaojiazhuang, from which excavated earth was trucked to a pit west of the plant. Su Chengzhang and his son, who scavenged for a living in Zhaojiazhuang, picked numerous knife coins out of the earth pile; not recognizing them at first, they later noticed illegible characters, kept collecting more, and sold them in bundles (a few yuan to over a thousand yuan per bundle), selling out within about a month. Stacking marks suggest the coins were neatly arranged when hoarded; surfaces are mostly grayish-green with soil staining, a few with patches of white lime. No pottery was found with them; presumably they were originally packed in now-decayed wood. Because the soil was dry and the packing good, the coins have no hard corrosion crust and did not fuse into a mass; after soaking in water the inscriptions become legible.
