Description

Unclear. In April 1992, villagers of Menjia Village, Daiwang Township, Lintong County, Shaanxi, including Meng Zengzhi, discovered two bronze "Ban Liang" coin molds along with a bronze shovel, iron chan spade, and other artifacts while digging earth about 50 m south of the village. The county cultural-relics office investigated on site and confirmed this to be a Qin-dynasty coin-casting workshop; the bronze furnace remains and Qin Ban Liang molds found here provide important evidence for the study of Qin political economy and the construction of the Qin mausoleum precinct. The site lies 0.5 km south of Daiwang Township and 2.5 km from the Mausoleum of Qin Shi Huang; the currently exposed area covers over 4,000 sq m. Fragments of various roof-tile-end building components are scattered throughout; more significantly, reddened burnt-earth pits and fragments of copper-smelting furnace walls were also found. Of the two coin molds discovered, one is rectangular with rounded corners, bearing two parallel rows of coin cavities within, six per row; each cavity is 2.8 cm in diameter with a square perforation 0.8 cm on a side, incised in seal script with the two characters 半两 (Ban Liang). Each cavity opens onto a sprue channel connected to a straight runner. The back of the mold has three lugs, two triangular in cross-section and 1.5 cm high, and one a horizontal ridge 3 cm long and 1.5 cm high. The mold is 21 cm long overall, 8.8 cm wide, with an edge thickness of 0.5 cm. The characters in the coin cavities are clear and rounded in style, matching previously known Qin Ban Liang script. The other mold is similar in shape, with two parallel rows of coin cavities, seven per row; each cavity is 2.6 cm in diameter with a square perforation 0.7 cm on a side, and the back bears four cylindrical lugs 1.2 cm high. The cavity diameters of the Ban Liang molds found here are close to those of Ban Liang coins previously found at the Qin mausoleum; combined with building remains matching other Qin mausoleum-area sites, this confirms both molds are Qin-dynasty objects, and that the site is a Qin-dynasty coin-casting workshop. A 2002 follow-up survey found the site 50 m south of Humeng Village, with a surviving area of 4,000 sq m. A 2014 survey found reddened burnt earth, Qin-Han pottery sherds, and charcoal fragments on the site's trampled surface.
