Description
Huangzhangzi Village, Laoguandi Town, 2014
Code: NE_CTX_0162
State: 窖藏Hoard
Period: 战国Warring States
Excavation year: 2014; hoard. On April 13, a villager of Huangzhangzi Village, Laoguandi Town, Jianping County, Chaoyang, unearthed a jar of knife coins while plowing his field; he took them home and weighed them, finding about 5 kilograms. On May 13, staff from the Jianping County Cultural Relics Office came to Huangzhangzi Village to inspect them. Most of the knife coins were broken and badly corroded, with few intact ones. On one relatively intact knife coin, characters could be faintly made out. Liu Yabin, director of the Cultural Relics Office, explained that the Jianping County area lay within Yan-state territory during the Warring States period; these are Warring States Yan-state knife coins, of the "Ming knife" type. Liu Yabin speculated that this location may formerly have been a private residence, whose owner, on relocating or for some other reason, buried the heavy and inconvenient-to-carry coins here; afterward, for unknown reasons, they were never dug up, leaving this jar of knife coins asleep underground for over 2000 years. Huangzhangzi Village could not be located; the current position given is Huangzhangzi Village.
