Description
This gold piece was discovered by Comrade Zhang Miaochun while digging a sweet-potato cellar in his own courtyard. The gold piece was found about 2 meters below the surface. The Zuo Zhuan records: "In the eleventh year of Duke Zhao of Lu (531 BCE), the Viscount of Chu built walled cities at Chen, Cai, and Bugeng, appointing Qiji as governor of Chen and Cai." The Henan Tongzhi (Gazetteer of Henan), juan 52, states: "The city of Dingling is north of the Wuyang County seat; the Zuo Zhuan's reference to Chu building Bugeng refers to this place." These textual records indicate that this location is the former site of Dongbugeng, the northern military stronghold of the state of Chu during the Spring and Autumn period. After Liberation (1949), abundant artifacts were unearthed underground here, including pottery drainage pipes, gold lumps, gold grains, bronze hu vessels, cinnabar, Chu-style bronze swords, sword-casting molds, Chu cowrie shells, half-round roof-tile ends (ban wadang), and stone axes, among other important finds. The discovery of this "Ying Yuan" further confirms that this is the former site of Dongbugeng built by Chu. Therefore, the casting date of this "Ying Yuan" piece likely has a lower bound around 530 BCE, in the mid-to-late Spring and Autumn period.
