Description

Hoard. A villager of Wuwangzhuang village, Yuguan Town, Funing County, recently discovered two damaged pottery jars while digging a water-supply pipeline, containing knife-shaped coins. According to the report, the coins are roughly a dozen centimeters long and have been preliminarily identified as Yan-state knife coins of the Warring States period. This find is small in quantity and poorly preserved, being extremely fragile and in poor condition, but it has some value for the study of production and daily life in the Warring States period. "Knife coin" is a general term for the various knife-shaped currencies of the Spring and Autumn/Warring States period — needle-tip knives, pointed-tip knives, Ming knives, Qi knives, and round-head knives among them — named for their blade-like shape. Li Yujun, deputy director of the Funing County Bureau of Culture, Radio, Television and Sports, noted that similar knife coins had previously been unearthed elsewhere in Funing County; of this find's pottery jars and coins, most are damaged, with only about a dozen relatively intact but badly corroded and with illegible inscriptions.
