Description
Hoard. Near Handan, the coins most commonly unearthed are "Gandan"-inscribed knife coins; over a hundred jin were unearthed in a single find near the Zhao royal tombs northwest of the urban area, along with scattered Yan- and Qi-state knife coins and Wei-state spade coins. Among the Handan Museum's acquisition records compiled by Qiao Dengyun since the 1960s, only one entry from 1983 is recorded, noting the acquisition of over 150 kg of Warring States knife and spade coins found near Tomb No. 3 of the Zhao royal tombs; this may well be the same hoard. Hao Liangzhen also records, in Handan Shihua, several hundred jin of Warring States coins unearthed from a satellite burial of Tomb No. 3, a considerable portion of which were knife coins inscribed "Gandan" and "Bairen". It is inferred that this find, besides straight knives, also included some Ming knives and Wei-state spade coins.
