Description
Hoard. The South Grand Canal has a bend projecting westward northwest of Xiaojialou village; the site is located on the eastern side of the bend. In the site's stratigraphy, the third layer is a black-soil layer belonging to the Warring States cultural layer, containing pottery sherds, burnt red earth, and charcoal fragments. Ash pits and burials all occur in this layer, and the knife coins were also unearthed from this layer. There were five ash pits in all, with round pit mouths. The burials were all disturbed, with only some fragmentary bones and burial goods surviving. The knife coins were found in two locations more than a meter apart; when unearthed they were bundled and stacked in the pit. An urn and an iron adze-like tool (tie jue) were found immediately next to the knife coins, with no other remains. The knife coins from this site have been analyzed. The pottery was not recorded by excavation unit; from the published material, the upper date limit of the site may extend to the late Spring and Autumn period (based on a pottery dou stemmed dish). The coins are all high-lead bronze, with lead content reaching over 50%.
