楚王城Chuwang City

不明，横岗镇城西村及城东村农庄自然村，县文物保护单位，战国、西汉，城址依山构筑，大体呈长方形，东西长约380米，南北宽约310米，城墙夯土筑成，高8.5米，基宽约18米，顶宽约3-5米，夯层明显，现四面各有一缺口，城内采集的遗物有战国时期的铜剑、蚁鼻钱、陶鼎足、簋、豆、印纹硬陶；西汉的陶鼎足、五铢钱，另外还有陶水管、筒瓦、绳纹陶片等，发现年份原文未注。据清光绪《宣城县志》载：'楚王城……因山创城，形势逶迤，门阙俨然；又云楚王英筑。'自鲁襄公三年（公元前570年）'楚子重伐吴，克鸠兹'后，历来为军事要塞（见《文物研究》总第九期）；此'楚王城'系后世附会楚王英，与既有表内湖北云梦、宜城之战国楚王城为不同性质的同名遗址，特此注明避免混淆。

Context unknown. Nongzhuang natural village, spanning Chengxi and Chengdong villages, Henggang Town; a county-level protected cultural-relics site; Warring States and Western Han periods. The city was built against a hillside, roughly rectangular in plan, about 380 m east-west and 310 m north-south; the wall is of rammed earth, 8.5 m high, with a base width of about 18 m and a top width of 3-5 m, its rammed layers clearly visible; there is now a gap on each of the four sides. Finds within the city include Warring-States bronze swords, ant-nose coins, pottery ding-tripod legs, gui vessels, dou dishes, and stamped hard pottery; Western Han pottery ding-tripod legs and Wuzhu coins; and pottery water pipes, tube tiles, and cord-marked pottery sherds. The discovery year is not recorded in the source. According to the Guangxu-era Gazetteer of Xuancheng County, "Chuwang City ... was built against the hill, its layout winding, its gates and towers stately; it is also said to have been built by King Ying of Chu." Since 570 BCE, when "Zizhong of Chu attacked Wu and took Jiuzi" (recorded in the third year of Duke Xiang of Lu), the site has consistently served as a military stronghold (see Cultural Relics Research, whole no. 9). This "Chuwang City" ("King of Chu's City") is a later attribution to King Ying of Chu, and is a different site from the Warring-States "Chuwang City" sites of the same name already recorded in this table at Yunmeng and Yicheng, Hubei; this is noted here to avoid confusion.
