Description
Context unknown. Around the Wangren market town, Wangren Town; Eastern Zhou and Han; also known as the Xicheng ("West City") site. The city plan is rectangular, roughly 1.5 km north-south by 1 km east-west, covering 1.5 sq km. As of the 1960s a stretch of the north city wall survived, built of rammed earth about 4 m wide and standing to a residual height of 2 m; the walls have now largely been leveled, but the moats on the west and north sides survive, and ant-nose coins have been found along the west moat. The discovery year is not recorded in the source. A group of Han-dynasty tombs lies 500 m east of the city. According to the Ming Zhengde-era Yingzhou Gazetteer, this was the "West City," later renamed Wanglaoren Market, today abbreviated to Wangren Market.
